If you're building a DIY electronics project and need a shell for it, consider using
cardboard. Cheap, easy to find and paint, it's great for a project that you might want to modify later. As an example, you can look to the Shamir family who used cardboard to build a pretty elaborate helicopter flight simulator.
The entire project has a DIY feel to it, with father and son using office equipment, old furniture and a variety of other odds and ends to get the job done. But the improvisational nature of the build doesn't make it any less high-tech. Its camera angles change depending on head movements and it can even simulate slight turbulence. It's connected to the air traffic radars in Los Angeles so they can simulate real flight patterns and traffic.
Of course, if cardboard feels a little too real for you, you can always just build your flight simulator in Occulus Rift.
